PBC Tournament: Braves Advance to Championship Game 20-15 over Armstrong Atlantic
COLUMBUS, Ga. – Powerful hitting was aplenty in the final game of day three of the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Tournament, as UNC Pembroke (41-10) topped Armstrong Atlantic (35-17) 20-15 Tuesday at Golden Park.
East No. 3-seed UNCP advances to the title game, while East No. 2-seed Armstrong is eliminated from the tournament. The Braves will play again Thursday against the victor of tomorrow’s North Georgia/Augusta State University matchup.
The teams combined for 32 hits and 25 runs, as the Braves had an eight-run inning in the fourth, nearly matched by the Pirates’ seven-run seventh.
The Braves came out firing, leading the game 7-2 headed into the top of the third. Armstrong put up four runs to make it 7-6 in the fourth, the big blow a two-run double from All-PBC third baseman Drew Walker.
The Braves would answer right back with their eight-run inning, taking advantage of four errors and five hits in the inning. Josh Haley ripped a two-run double, and Kenny Mickens added a two-run single as well.
A seven-run surge in the seventh put the Pirates at 19-13, but they could inch no closer.
Each starter had a hit for the Braves, led by the All-PBC centerfielder in Haley, going 5-for-5 with four RBI and four runs. Designated hitter Mickens went 2-for-3 adding six RBI and a home run before exiting after being hit in the face by a pitch.
The Pirates had some gaudy numbers of their own, led by All-PBC catcher John Roberts, hitting 4-for-6 with four RBI and three runs. Walker finished with five RBI on his 4-for-6 game. The 2-3-4 slots in the Pirate order were a combined 10-of-16 with seven runs scored and 11 RBI. Roberts and Walker each hit home runs in the losing effort.
