Following the conclusion of regular-season play on Sunday, the
Peach Belt Conference has released the bracket for the 2009
Tournament May 9-10 in Aiken, S.C. USC Aiken will serve as host of
the tournament and is also the #1 seed. In a change from previous
years, the PBC Tournament will be a single-elimination competition
that brings together the top eight teams in the league. All eight
will play on Saturday at Roberto Hernandez Stadium in Aiken, with
the final four winners playing in the semifinals and championship
on Sunday.
The Peach Belt Conference regular season championship is the
second overall and the first for the Pacers since the 1994
campaign. USCA claimed at least a share of the title after winning
two of three games against UNC Pembroke last weekend in their final
PBC games, but had to wait and see if GCSU could sweep Augusta
State to claim a share. ASU ended up taking two of the three games
at GCSU, giving USCA the outright title. USCA was already the #1
seed, thanks to their series win over GCSU earlier this season.
Francis Marion will be the second seed while GCSU falls to third
after facing Augusta State. North Georgia ended up in a tie with
Armstrong Atlantic State at 15-12 in conference play, but North
Georgia won the tiebreak thanks to taking two of three from the
Pirates earlier this season, including a 12-inning classic.
However, AASU and North Georgia will face each other on Saturday in
the first round.
UNC Pembroke makes their first PBC Tournament appearance since the
event was reborn in 2006. The Braves will be the #6 seed while
Columbus State is the #7 seed. Augusta State also makes their first
tournament appearance as the #8 seed. The Jaguars were in a battle
for that spot with Lander, but won it thanks to their
aforementioned wins in Milledgeville.
FMU and CSU will begin the tournament at 9:00 am with GCSU meeting
UNC Pembroke at 12:30; North Georgia and Armstrong Atlantic State
at 4:00 and host USC Aiken meeting rival Augusta State at 7:30 pm.
The two semifinal games on Sunday are slated for 11:00 am and 2:30
pm with the championship game Sunday night at 6:00 pm.
The winner of the PBC Tournament will receive the PBC's automatic
bid into the NCAA Tournament.
