Haley, Shreves and Dennard Named Baseball Players of the Week
Player of the Week
Josh Haley, UNC Pembroke
Sr. • OF • Jackson Springs, N.C.
Haley hit .667 (14-21) with a .905 slugging percentage in four games last week, driving in three and scoring seven. He had three or more hits in all four games with a pair of doubles and a home run. In a three-game set with #11 Lander he hit .733 (11-15), going 5-for-6 in the opener with the game-winning RBI in the 12th inning. He doulbed in game two, scoring twice and scored two more times in the finale. He did not strike out and had a .696 on-base percentage. Doubled and homered against St. Augustine's earlier in the week. Currently second in the PBC with a .409 batting average and fourth in on-base and 10th in slugging percentages.
Pitcher of the Week
Michael Shreves, Montevallo
Jr. • LHP • Bradenton, Fla.
Shreves was one infield away from a perfect game on Friday as he tossed a complete-game on-hitter in a win over Augusta State. The junior allowed an infield single to start the second inning, then proceeded to retire the rest of the Jaguars in order, 24 in a row, to end the game. He struck out seven in facing one over the minumum and did not issue a walk. The complete game is his second of the year, making him one of five PBC pitchers to have more than one this season. He is 3-0 in his last three starts with four earned runs allowed in 24.2 innings pitched.
Freshman of the Week
R.J. Dennard, Armstrong
Fr. • 1b • Soperton, Ga.
Dennard hit .500 in four games last week with a .714 slugging percentage and five RBIs. The freshman hit .545 (6-for-11) in a three-game sweep of #3 USC Aiken, nearly hitting for the cycle in the second game as he singled, doubled and tripled, driving in four and scoring twice. He drove in another in the series finale, going 2-for-4. He collected a hit in all four Pirate games, scoring five runs in total and drawing three walks for a .588 on-base percentage. Dennard is now third in the Peach Belt with a .405 batting average and also third in on-base percentage and sixth in RBIs.
