Braves Add Three to Basketball Roster

PEMBROKE, N.C. --

UNCP men’s basketball head coach Jason Tinsley announced the signing of Jamaad Parker to a national letter of intent and the addition of Winston-Salem State transfers David Moore and Jason Smith to the Braves’ roster for the upcoming season.

Parker, a 6-3 guard from Lithonia, Ga., played for coach Anthony Stroud at Southwest Dekalb High School. During his senior year he averaged 14 points, six assists and five rebounds per game for the Panthers and scored a season-high 30 points against St. Pius High School.

“Jamaad is a combo guard with excellent shooting range and the ability to beat people off the dribble,” Tinsley said. “He has very good size and quickness which will enable him to be a good college player.”

Parker earned two letters in basketball while also excelling in the classroom. He is a member of the National Honor Society, the National Society of High Scholars and the Brothers of Leadership & Distinction. The son of Marilyn and John Parker, Jr., Jamaad plans on majoring in chemistry once he arrives on campus.

“Jamaad is a true student-athlete,” added Tinsley. “With support from his family he has accomplished as much in the classroom as he has on the floor.”

Moore, a 6-5 forward from Durham, N.C., made six starts for the Rams last season and played in all 29 games. He scored 82 points and pulled down 54 rebounds with 10 steals, six assists and three blocks for WSSU. Prior to his arrival to Winston-Salem, Moore attended Cape Fear Community College. At Cape Fear, he was named all-Region 10 twice in two seasons.

“David is an outstanding athlete that can defend every position on the floor,” said Tinsley. “He rebounds the ball well and can score off the dribble from the perimeter and around the basket.”

While at Cape Fear, Moore averaged 14 points and 9.8 rebounds per game his sophomore season but, in two seasons, he totaled 709 points with a .570 shooting percentage while also tallying 378 rebounds. His numbers represented a handful of CFCC school records.

The son of Gwenna Span and David Moore, Sr., David graduated from Riverside High School in 2003.

“David is a quality person and student that will be a good addition to our program,” Tinsley said.

Smith, a 6-3 guard from Charlotte, N.C., played one season for the Rams, appearing in nine games before suffering a season-ending knee injury. Smith played for coach Jason Grube at East Mecklenburg High School where he was a three-time all-conference performer. EMHS won the Southwestern 4A Conference championship twice during his career.

“Jason is a point guard with good size and strength,” Tinsley said. “With his size and strength, he is able to get into the lane and score over bigger players. He is a very good rebounder who does a great job of seeing the floor and making good decisions with the basketball.”

Over his high school career, Smith averaged nine points, nine assists and six rebounds per game. During his senior year, he averaged 12 points per game with eight assists and seven rebounds per game. He also participated in the East/West all-star game.

The son of Linda and Gregory Smith, Jason graduated from EMHS in 2006.

“We are excited to have Jason join our program,” Tinsley said.
