SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Armstrong Atlantic State head men's basketball
coach Jeff Burkhamer has announced his signing class for 2007-08,
introducing six new players who will join the Pirates for the
upcoming season.
Two members of the St. Petersburg College Titans start the class as
juniors Calvin Wilson (6-5, 210, G/F, Lake Wales, Fla.) and
Tametria "T.T." Hall (6-3, 180, G, West Palm Beach, Fla.) will join
the Pirates after two seasons. Wilson averaged 10 points and five
rebounds a game in 2006-07, while Hall averaged 16 points a game
and hit 48.5 percent of his three-point shots, the third-best
three-point percentage among Florida junior college players last
year. Wilson, whose cousin is Amare Stoudemire of the Phoenix Suns,
and Hall teamed to help the Titans to a 21-11 record this season
and a second-place finish in the Suncoast Conference.
"Calvin Wilson is a tremendous athlete that is comfortable playing
with his back to the basket or faced up at 18 feet," coach
Burkhamer said. "We feel Calvin will cause some matchup problems
for our opponents. T.T. is another outstanding athlete, an
outstanding long range threat who can also put the ball on the
floor and score going to the rim. T.T. plays very hard and will be
counted on to score and defend." The next member of the class is
junior Aussie point guard Andrew Webber (5-10, 175, G, Belair,
South Australia). Coach Burkhamer says, "Andrew is a true point
guard and a coach on the floor. He understands the game and will be
a great complement to William Kane. Andrew is a terrific open court
player and will make his teammates better through his ability to
penetrate and pass the basketball."
The Pirates have also added a new shooting guard in senior Corey
Johnson (6-1, 190, G, Fayetteville, N.C.), a transfer from
Arkansas-Little Rock. Johnson played in 27 games for the Trojans
last season after transferring from Aiken Tech, where he was a
two-time All-Region performer. "Corey is the scoring guard that
we've been looking for throughout the recruiting season," Burkhamer
said. "He will replace Tory Harris and will be relied upon to
create and make shots. Corey is a very good shooter with
three-point range but can also get to the basket or pull up for the
mid-range jumper."
A pair of forwards with local ties round out the class as junior
Brian Moultrie (6-6, 210, F, Beaufort, S.C.) and junior Bobby
Ancrum (6-5, 250, F, Savannah, Ga.) will join the Pirates this
fall. Moultrie helped Clinton Junior College to a 19-9 record and a
second-place finish this season, averaging 17.5 points and nine
rebounds per game, and is a former All-State honoree from Battery
Creek HS. Ancrum last played for Truett-McConnell Junior College in
2004-05, averaging 11 points and eight rebounds per game, and was a
basketball and football standout at Beach HS in Savannah.
"Brian is an aggressive post player," Burkhamer said. "He is very
athletic and active, and I really like how he attacks the boards
and defends the paint. Brian's length will change shots and he will
be a shot blocker for us on the back line. Bobby gives us size and
strength in the post and he will be a tough matchup for our
opponents."
These six players join seven returnees from last season's squad
that went 21-9 overall and advanced to the NCAA Championships for
the third time in the last four seasons, a program first. AASU has
also won 20 games in three of the last four seasons and has won 13
consecutive opening games in the Peach Belt Conference tournament.
AASU will open the 2007-08 season at the Peach Belt/Carolinas
Challenge on November 16-17 as they face Coker and St. Andrews.
