AUGUSTA, GA -- The Peach Belt Conference announced the 2009
men’s basketball All-Conference team on the eve of the PBC
Tournament. USC Aiken’s Chris Commons was named the PBC
Player of the Year while Georgia Southwestern’s Evan Mobley
is the Freshman of the Year. GCSU coach Terry Sellers was named the
Coach of the Year.
Commons becomes the fifth PBC men’s basketball player to
earn the Player of the Year honor in back-to-back seasons, joining
Tyrekus ‘AJ’ Bowman, who shared the award with Commons
in 2008 and won it in 2007. This season, Commons has led the Pacers
to a 21-6 overall record and a national ranking all year long. He
was second in the PBC in scoring with 18.7 points per game and 12th
in rebounding with 6.1 per contest. He is also third in the league
in blocked shots. A senior from Toledo, Ohio, Commons became the
sixth USCA player to scored 1,000 career points, accomplishing that
in 48 games as a Pacer.
Evan Mobley becomes the first GSW student-athlete in any sport
to claim one of the PBC’s major awards. A freshman from
Savannah, Ga., Mobley played in all 27 games for the Hurricanes
this year, starting in 18. He was fourth on the team and in the top
30 in the league in scoring with 9.8 points per game. He scored a
season-high 24 against Lander and hit the game-winning shot at UNC
Pembroke. He is 11th in the PBC in steals. Georgia Southwestern
joined the PBC in 2007-08 and the team will be making their first
PBC Tournament appearance on Wednesday.
Terry Sellers has been the coach at Georgia College & State
University for 16 years and receives his fourth PBC Coach of the
Year honor. Sellers and the Bobcats finished tied for third in the
PBC standings with a 15-5 conference record, were nationally-ranked
and are the only team in the PBC to have wins over both ASU and
USCA. At 21-5 overall, GCSU has been ranked as high at 14th in the
nation. Sellers also won Coach of the Year awards in 1997, 2000 and
2006.
Below is the 2009 men’s basketball All-Conference team.
The team was selected by the league’s head coaches, who were
not permitted to vote for their own players. Players will be
presented their awards prior to their first PBC Tournament game.
