Jul 1, 2009 Clayton State Adds Pair of JUCO Standouts MORROW, Ga. Clayton State head coach Gordon Gibbons announced
the signing of power forward Germeil Daniels from Louisburg College
in Louisburg, N.C., and shooting guard Shasta Scott from Iowa
Western Community College.
The addition of both Daniels and Scott brings Clayton State’s
men’s basketball recruiting to six newcomers currently. The
duo joins NJCAA All-Region point guard Tim Downs from Palm Beach
Community College and NJCAA All-Region forward Brandon Robinson
from Seminole College, in addition to pair of Division I transfers
– center Armond Jones from Liberty and Robert Murry from
Morehead State.
“We are excited to add these two outstanding young men to our
program,” said Gibbons, 155-86 entering his ninth season at
the Clayton State helm. “Both players fit our system nicely
and will help fill the void left by our departing senior
class.”
Daniels, a 6-foot-7, 225-pounder from Greenville, N.C., gives the
Lakers a legitimate inside scoring threat that Clayton State lacked
this past season. He is a strong, explosive post that finishes well
around the rim and shoots consistently well from 15 feet and
in.
Daniels was a first team NJCAA All-Region 10 selection this season
at Louisburg under head coach John Meeks, helping pace the
Hurricanes to a 21-9 record. In addition, he was also the
fifth-ranked player in the state of North Carolina at the junior
college level, according to Jamie Stowe of SLAM JAM Basketball.
This season, he averaged 13 points and nine rebounds a game and
shot 65 percent from the field, ranking him seventh in the nation
in field goal percentage.
Daniels prepped at Conley High School in Greenville, where he was a
two-time All-County selection, and also a standout tight end in
football.
Scott, a 6-1, 180-pounder from Macon, Ga., averaged three 3-point
baskets and eight 3-point attempts a game and shot 36 percent from
3-point range over two seasons at both Iowa Western and State Fair
Community College in Sedelia, Mo. In addition, he earned his
Associate’s Degree from Iowa Western this spring.
Gibbons will look for Scott to be the Lakers’ legitimate
long-range threat off the bench for the upcoming season.
Despite battling an injury this season at Iowa Western, Scott shot
36 percent from 3-point range in the process for a
nationally-ranked JUCO program at Iowa Western. During his freshman
season at State Fair, Scott averaged 11 points, four rebounds and
two assists a game, while shooting 35 percent from 3-point range
with 86 3-point baskets.
Scott prepped at Taylor County High School and played his senior
season at North Atlanta Prep in Covington, Ga.
