FLORENCE, S.C. – Francis Marion University men's basketball coach Gary Edwards has announced the signing of 6-7 forward Juan Perez of Florence and 6-2 guard Gabriel Dickerson of Suffolk, Va., to national letters of intent during the recent early signing period.
Perez is a senior at West Florence High School, where he has plays for coach Pete Ellis. Last season for the Knights, he averaged 6.1 points, 10.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. He connected on 41 percent of his field goal attempts and 66 percent of his free throws.
"Currently coming off an injury, I think that Juan's best basketball is ahead of him," Edwards said. "A local product, he gives us skills that we are looking for: size, rebounding, and shooting ability. He fits the style we are playing, and as an outstanding student will easily mesh into our idea of a Patriot student-athlete."
Dickerson attends Atlantic Shores Christian Academy. As a junior, he averaged 17 points per contest at Alliance Christian Academy.
Dickerson chose FMU over Wright State University, Columbus State University, and Virginia State University.
"Gabriel will ease us into life after Detrek (current Patriot standout senior DetrekBrowning). He is very athletic and I look for him to be able to play right away. He can play shooting guard as well as the point position. He epitomizes the type of player we are looking to recruit. With a great academic background, he brings everything to the table. I couldn't be happier to have him sign early. In addition, he hails from my old stomping grounds in southeastern Virginia."
"Together, these two both fit our system well and will help to fill voids that we will need to address for the 2018-19 season."
There are four seniors on the current 5-0 Patriot squad. FMU is in a break for exams and will return to action on Dec. 13 with a 7 p.m. game at the University of Mount Olive.
