Apr 29, 2008 Six PBC Golf Teams Advance to NCAA Tournament INDIANAPOLIS, IND -- Six Peach Belt Conference golf teams
learned that they will get a shot at the national championship as
they received bids to the Southeast Regional Tournament. USC Aiken,
GCSU, Columbus State, Clayton State, Lander and Armstrong Atlantic
State will all compete May 5-7.
USC Aiken received the league’s automatic bid to the NCAAs
after winning the PBC Championship last week in Aiken, finishing 10
strokes ahead of Clayton State. The other five teams received
at-large bids. Clayton State makes their first NCAA appearance
since 2003 while the other five schools competed in the 2007
event.
The six PBC schools are among the 80 teams and 50 individuals
selected nationwide to compete. Also competing in the Southeast
Region are Newberry and Carson-Newman. Five individuals will also
compete, none from PBC schools.
The Southeast Regional will be played alongside the Atlantic
Regional for a super regional at the Point Lake Golf Club in
Belmont, N.C. The event will be hosted by Belmont Abbey. The top
team from each region within the super regional and the top
individual not with a team from each super regional (regardless of
region) will advance to the finals May 14-17 at the Division II
Spring National Championships Festival in Houston, Texas. The
finals will be hosted by Rice University and the Harris
County-Houston Sports Authority.
In addition to the Atlantic Regional winner and the Southeast
Regional winner, the top three other teams from the combined super
regional standings will also advance to the national finals in
Houston.
PBC teams have won the Southeast Regional for six straight years,
with Columbus State taking the title in 2007. The Peach Belt
Conference is home to seven national championships.
