May 13, 2008 AASU's Wolfe Selected For The USA vs. Japan Collegiate Golf SAVANNAH, Ga. – Armstrong Atlantic State junior men's
golfer Chris Wolfe will be one of 12 golfers around the nation
chosen to represent the United States in the 2008 Fuji Xerox USA
vs. Japan Collegiate Golf Championship. Wolfe, the 2008 Peach Belt
Conference's Player of the Year, will take part in the 33rd annual
competition on July 16-18 at the Tokyo Golf Club.
Wolfe becomes the first American AASU student-athlete to represent
the United States in international competition in the Peach Belt
era. He is joined on the club by seven other men's golfers and four
women's golfers in the competition - Wolfe's colleagues include
players from Auburn, UCLA, Pepperdine, North Carolina and Southern
California.
"This is an opportunity that will last with Chris for a lifetime,"
head coach Michael Butler said. "The experience he will gather in
representing the United States is something that he will carry on
to next year and his future endeavors in golf."
Honored as a GCAA Division II All-American as a sophomore, Wolfe
elevated his game this year to card a school-record 71.91 stroke
average in 29 rounds. He captured four individual tournament
titles, another school record, and missed qualifying for the NCAA
DII National Championships as an individual by just one stroke.
"Our schedule all year long has been a difficult one, and Chris'
outstanding effort this season playing that schedule has obviously
attracted attention on a national scale," Butler said. "This trip
to Japan can only enhance his visibility, as well as the visibility
of the Armstrong Atlantic State golf program."
The Warner Robins, Ga., native has won seven collegiate tournaments
in three seasons and will head into his senior season in 2008-09
with an eye on the Peach Belt Conference's individual record of
nine victories, held by USC Aiken's Scott Brown.
The USA team will be coached by Kent State's Mike Morrow and Barry
University's Jimmy Stobs. Team USA leads the all-time series, 24-8,
and has won the last eight competitions in Japan. Complete coverage
of the 2008 Fuji Xerox USA vs. Japan Collegiate Golf Championship
