Spring Hill Suites Intercollegiate | Alabama State Fall Classic

Pacers Finish Second at Springhill Suites Intercollegiate

FLORENCE, S.C. – The 18th-ranked University of South Carolina Aiken Golf team finished the 2011 Springhill Suites Intercollegiate at the 7,062-yard, par 72 Country Club of South Carolina in second place as a team.

The Pacers with a three-round team tally of 4-under 860 (288-288-284) tied Samford (285-288-287) for second at the tournament hosted by Francis Marion.

USC Aiken has now concluded its first two tournaments of the fall of 2011 in second place. The Pacers ended the Eighth Annual Kiawah Island Invitational one week earlier in second place out of 17 teams.

Furman won the 2011 Springhill Suites Intercollegiate with an 8-under team score of 856 (288-283-285).

Furman’s Matthew Broome claimed individual medalist honors at the tournament with an 8-under score of 208 (68-69-71).

Broome’s 208 allowed him to just beat out USC Aiken’s Kyle Godsman (Moray, Scotland/Lossiemouth), who ended the Springhill Suites Intercollegiate tied for second with Charleston Southern’s David Denlinger at 209. Godsman (70-68-71) claimed his first top five finish as a Pacer in the event.

USC Aiken’s Matt Atkins (Owensboro, Ky./Henderson State) claimed his third top 10 finish as a Pacer with a sixth place finish. Atkins finished with a three-round score of 213 (70-71-72).

The Pacers will next play in Akron’s Firestone Invitational at the par 72 Firestone Country Club. The tournament will be contested Monday, Oct. 10-Tuesday, Oct. 11. USC Aiken will be playing in the Firestone Invitational for the first time in 2011.

Hurricanes Fourth at Alabama State Classic

MONTGOMERY, ALA -- The Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes turned in their second straight top-five finish to begin the 2011 falls season as they finished fourth at the Alabama State Fall Golf Classic on Tuesday.  The 'Canes fired a two-day 605, finishing two strokes behind Spring Hill College in third.  Host Alabama State won the event with a 592 at the 6,773-yard, par-72 Lagoon Park Golf Club.

GSW was in third place following the first round of action with a team 300, but stumbled a bit with a 305 on day two to slip behind Spring Hill.  Craig Gibson once again turned in consistent rounds with a 73 and 75 to finish at 148 (+4) and tied for second place.  Gibson has now finished in the top 10 in each of the first two tournaments of the year.

Nate Gahman finished in a tie for 10th with a 151 (+7) while J.P. Griffin had back-to-back 77s to finish at 154 and tied for 19th.  Christopher Hall was tied for 21st with a 155 while Travis Oestmann, in his first action of the season, finished at 160.

Faulkner's Erik Hilde won the tournament with a 73-72=145 (+1).

Georgia Southwestern will be staying in Alabama as the fall season continues.  The 'Canes will play in the Grand National Challenge beginning Sept. 17 in Opelika, Ala.

Bobcat Golf Finishes 11th at SpringHill Suites Intercollegiate

FLORENCE, S.C. – The Georgia College golf team stayed put against its top competition of the season, finishing in 11th place at the SpringHill Suites Intercollegiate, a primarily Division I event.

The Bobcats ended the three-round event 22 off the pace of first place Furman University with GC carding 878 strokes. The Bobcats were unable to pick up any ground today, finishing five behind 10th and seven behind a tie for eighth. Samford University finished knotted up in second place with USC Aiken (860).

Junior Taylor Smith (Mansfield, Ga.) was tops for the Bobcats with 218 strokes, good for a tie at 25th. Smith finished 2-over on the par-72, 7,062-yard Country Club of South Carolina Course.

Sophomore Victor Monte (Chantilly, Va.) came storming up from GC's fourth spot to take second, shooting 2-under on the final day of the tournament to finish at four-over, tied for 32nd.

Junior Patrick Garrett (Kennesaw, Ga.) shot an even 72 on the final day of the tournament and plus-five overall and Bernardo Bide (Olavarria, Argentina) finished the last round with a 75, bringing his final tally to 224. Garrett finished tied for 37th and Bide placed in a tie for 53rd at eight over par.

Rookie David Sullivan (Woodstock, Ga.) played at No. 5 and shot a combined 225 in his first career tournament for GC, staying consistent shooting a 76, 75 and 75, placing in a tie for 63rd.

The Bobcats are back in action Monday, Sept. 16 at the Sandestin Collegiate Championship in Destin, Fla. hosted by the University of West Florida.
