Men's Golf Captures Second-Straight Richard Rendleman Invitational Title

SALISBURY  – No. 18 UNCP combined for its lowest round in more than two years to easily outdistance the rest of the 18-team team field and successfully defend its title at the Richard Rendleman Invitational on Tuesday afternoon at the par-71, 6,665-yard Country Club of Salisbury.

All five UNCP entries carded even-par rounds of 71 or better to fuel the tournament-best round. Scott Lambert (71-69/140) shot a 2-under-par 69 to finish in a tie for second place – just one stroke off the pace set by Belmont Abbey's Adam Hedges (71-68/139). Jonathan McCurry (72-71/143) carded an even-par 71 in the second round to finish in a tie for 8th, while Jordan Walor (75-69/144) bettered his day one round by six strokes on his way to finishing the event in a tie for 12th. Carson Lanier (74-71/145) and Michael Mullman (74-71/145) both registered an even-par 71 on Tuesday en route to tying for 15th place.

UNCP (291-280/571) booked its best round since shooting a 280 on the final day of the 2010 Honda of Columbia Fall Classic and concluded its stay in Salisbury with a 10-stroke lead over second place Lincoln Memorial. No. 21 Carson-Newman (296-286/582) concluded the event in third place, while Barton (298-289/587) and Lenoir-Rhyne (300-291/591) rounded out the top five.

The result marked the second-straight year the Braves have taken top honors at the event. UNCP bested the rest of the 17-team field by six strokes in capturing the 2011 Richard Rendleman Invitational.

The Braves will resume their 2012 Spring schedule this weekend when they pack up their show and head to Orangeburg, S.C., to take part in the Magnolia Invitational at the Orangeburg Country Club.

Clemson, Kohles Claim Top Honors at 15th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate

AIKEN, S.C. – Clemson won the team title and Virginia’s Ben Kohles claimed individual medalist honors at the 15th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate at the 6,617-yard par-70 Palmetto Golf Club.

The Tigers at 854 (286-285-283) ended the three-round tournament one stroke ahead of second-place team Virginia (292-278-285). South Carolina obtained third place with a cumulative three-round team tally of 863 (286-284-293).

Virginia’s Kohles and Clemson’s Crawford Reeves entered the third and final round on Tuesday tied for first. Playing in the same group on the final day of the event, Kohles (69-70-69=208) narrowly edged out Reeves by posting a 69 in the final round. Reeves (69-70-70=209) carded a 70 in round three.

Virginia’s Ben Rusch finished third individually at 212 (74-69-69).

Kohles has now won the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate in two of the last three years. He also garnered individual medalist honors in the 2010 Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate with a score of 204 (70-63-72). The win in the 15th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate allows Kohles to become Virginia’s all-time wins leader, as he now has six individual wins in his career.

Nationally 15th-ranked USC Aiken finished the 15th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate in a tie for 12 with Presbyterian at 896. After posting back-to-back team scores of 295 in the first two rounds, USC Aiken closed out its home event with a 306 in round three.

USC Aiken’s JP Solis (Morelia, Mexico/Lico Morelia) claimed his second straight top-25 finish in the event by ending his efforts tied for 25th at 219 (74-71-74).

USC Aiken will next compete in the Magnolia Invitational at the Orangeburg Country Club in Orangeburg, S.C. The 54-hole tournament hosted by Newberry will be contested on Monday, Mar. 12 and Tuesday, Mar. 13.
