PBC Releases Men's Soccer All-Conference Team

AUGUSTA, GA -- The Peach Belt Conference released the 2007 men’s soccer All-Conference team on Thursday. For the first time in league history, the PBC recognized co-Players of the Year as Clayton State’s Tonny Madegwa and USC Aiken’s Kofi Akyere shared the honor. Clayton State is also home to two other major honors as Jamal Geathers was named the Freshman of the Year and Pete Petersen the Coach of the Year.

Tonny Madegwa is the senior leader of the PBC’s highest-scoring offense of 2007. A native of Nairobi, Kenya, Madegwa led the league and is ranked 18th nationally in assists with 10. He also scored 11 goals, fourth-best in the PBC, and had 32 points, second only behind teammate Jamal Geathers. Madegwa also had three game-winning goals this year and becomes only the second Laker to win the Player of the Year award, joining Marco Capazario who won in 2001.

Kofi Akyere is the first USC Aiken Pacer to ever receive Player of the Year honors. A junior from Union City, Ga., Akyere was tied for second in the PBC with 12 goals and was third in points in 2007. He scored six of the team’s 11 goals in conference games and his 11 scores is the most by a Pacer in 10 years.

Jamal Geathers led the Peach Belt in goals with 16 in 2007 and in points with 33. He averaged just under a goal per game and had two multi-goal games with one hat trick. The freshman from Aiken, S.C., also led the league with five game-winning goals. Geathers becomes the second Laker to win the Freshman of the Year, joining Andre Roll who won the honor in 2003.

Pete Petersen takes home his second Coach of the Year award in three seasons after leading the Lakers to their third straight PBC Championship, and second outright, in the last three years. Currently in his fourth season at Clayton State, Petersen’s 2007 Lakers are hosting this weekend’s PBC Tournament finals and the team is currently ranked 14th in the nation.
