AUGUSTA, GA – With the final whistle blown on the regular season, the Peach Belt Conference has released the bracket and seeds for the 2018 PBC men’s soccer tournament. The top six teams in the league standings advance to the postseason with the top two seeds receiving byes into the semifinal round. The other four teams will begin with quarterfinal matches on Tuesday, Oct. 30, hosted by the higher seed.
The winners of those two matches will join the top two seeds at Blanchard Woods Park in Evans, Ga., for the semifinals and finals on Friday, Nov. 2 and Sunday, Nov. 4. Blanchard Woods Park is hosting the finals for the 11thyear in a row.
Young Harris will be the top seed and earned a bye to the semifinals. The Mountain Lions, ranked #2 in the nation, put the cap on a perfect regular season with a 6-1 win over Francis Marion on Saturday to run their record to 15-0. Young Harris won three straight PBC Tournaments from 2014-16, but had that streak broken last season. YHC becomes the first team to go through the regular season without a loss or tie since USC Upstate in 1998.
Lander is the defending PBC Tournament champions and are the #2 seed for the PBC Tournament. Ranked #7 in the nation, the Bearcats shutout Flagler 2-0 on Saturday to move to 13-1-2 overall on the season. Lander has played in the last three PBC Tournament championship games and have won the event five times overall.
North Georgia jumped into a tie with Francis Marion on Saturday following their 3-1 win at Georgia Southwestern. UNG takes the tiebreak over the Patriots thanks to a 5-2 win in Florence earlier this month. North Georgia made their first appearance in the PBC championship game in 2017 and will be trying to make their third straight trip to Blanchard Woods Park.
Francis Marion will be the fourth seed for the tournament and host a quarterfinal game for the fifth time in six years. The Patriots fell to Young Harris in the regular-season finale on Saturday, breaking a four-match winning streak. FMU will be looking for their first trip to Blanchard Woods since 2015.
Flagler fell at Lander in Saturday’s finale to claim the fifth seed. The Saints battled back from a slow start to the season and were .500 in the month of October. Flagler is the 2011 tournament champion and have reached the championship game three times.
Clayton State earned the sixth seed on Saturday with their 1-0 win at USC Aiken. A loss would have eliminated the Lakers from tournament contention. The 2007 PBC Tournament champions, Clayton State will be looking for their third trip to Evans in the last five years.
The PBC office will announce game times for Tuesday’s quarterfinals on Monday. The tournament website can be found here.
