YHC's Gomez named United Soccer Coaches National Player of the Week

KANSAS CITY, Mo. | Young Harris College's Carlos Gomez has been named the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II Men's Player of the Week ending Oct. 28.

This is the fifth time that a Mountain Lion player has earned the weekly award. Ilija Ilic was twice recognized in 2014, while Niall McCabe was honored during the 2013 campaign and teammate Mikie Rowe was selected earlier this season.

Gomez scored three goals with two assists as the second-ranked Mountain Lions put a cap on perfect regular season with two wins.  The senior midfielder/forward from Algete, Spain, scored the game-winning goal with 13 seconds left in double overtime as Young Harris beat the University of North Georgia 3-2.  He also provided an assist in that match.  He then scored two more goals and added another assist as YHC captured the Peach Belt Conference Championship outright with a 6-1 win over Francis Marion University. YHC is the first team since the University of South Carolina Spartanburg (now USC Upstate) in 1998 to go through the regular season without a loss or a tie.  Gomez currently leads the PBC with eight assists, is second in the conference in goals and second in points.

Young Harris (15-0-0) earned the No. 1 seed in the PBC Tournament and they will play either No. 4 Francis Marion or No. 5 Flagler College in an 11 a.m. semifinal match Friday (Nov. 2) at Blanchard Woods Park in Evans, Georgia
