Sep 24, 2007 AASU's Jendelund, USCA's Darezzo and Horne Emerge From ITA Mid-Atlantic Regional SAVANNAH, Ga. - The men's portion of the 2007 ITA Mid-Atlantic
Regional concluded on Monday with champions in the singles and
doubles portion with intra-team battles in the finals of both
draws.
In singles, AASU's Robert Jendelund emerged from an all-Pirate
semifinal lineup to capture the title with a 6-2, 6-1 win over
Christian Bergh. Jendelund, a 9-16 seed for the tournament, breezed
through the field without dropping a set en route to a return trip
to the ITA Small College National Championships - the senior
represented the Pirates two seasons ago as the region doubles
champion. Along the way, Jendelund defeated three higher seeded
opponents with a 6-1, 6-2 win over 5-8 seed Bruno Seves of USC
Aiken, a 6-4, 6-3 win over teammate and third-seeded Paul Bishop
and the final victory over Bergh, another 5-8 seed.
Doubles play was an all USC Aiken affair as the second-seeded team
of Dagoberto Darezzo and Andrew Horne knocked off Franklin Emmanuel
and Oshada Wijemanne of Francis Marion, 8-2, to earn a berth in the
final. The unseeded duo of Seves and Chris Kaetz earned its berth
in the finals with an 8-2 win over the fourth-seeded duo of
Guilherme Fonseva and George Wilkinson of Lander. The final was won
by the second-seeded Darezzo and Horne, 8-5, sending them to the
ITA Small College National Championships.
Jendelund and the duo of Darezzo and Horne will now travel to
Mobile, Ala., on October 11-14 to compete in the DII draws against
the winners from the other seven regions across the country. Each
division winner will then compete in the Super Bowl against winners
from Division III, NAIA and Junior College.
