Men’s Tennis Player of the Week: Zach Whaanga, Columbus State

Whaanga went 3-0 in both singles and doubles as the Cougars stormed out of the gate in conference play.  The junior from Wellington, New Zealand, began with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Anderson’s Jeffrey Dayton at #2 singles.  He remained at that spot and beat 33rd-ranked Eirik Groner of #8 Lander 7-6, 7-5, 10-4.  He moved up to #1 singles for the first time to beat Young Harris’ Guilherme Sergio 3-6, 6-2, 13-11.  In doubles, he partnered with Matei Avram in all three matches, beating the Anderson duo of Duarte/Depiaggio 8-1, Lander’s Groner/Couto 8-5 and YHC’s Besada/Fleerkamp 8-6.  Whaanga is now 5-0 in singles play and 6-0 in doubles.
