Montevallo to Reinstate Men’s Cross Country in 2010

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo Athletic Department announced today (Sept. 8) that men’s cross country will rejoin the Falcon athletic family beginning in the fall of 2010. With the addition of men’s cross country, Montevallo now offers 11 varsity sports.

Women’s cross country head coach Michael Marquardt will assume the new role as head coach of both men’s and women’s cross country.

"I am excited that we will be adding a men's team to begin competition next fall,” said coach Marquardt. “I believe having a men's and women's program will complement each other and help each other become successful. Our University will also be a viable option to young men that might not have even known about the University of Montevallo and what we have to offer in academics as well as collegiate competition."

Men’s cross country made its debut at Montevallo in 1961. The University fielded a team for five years before discontinuing the sport in 1966. Cross country will be the fifth men’s sport at Montevallo.

Montevallo will become the 10th Peach Belt Conference school to sponsor men’s cross country joining Armstrong Atlantic State University, Augusta State University, Clayton State University, Columbus State University, Flagler College, Francis Marion University, Georgia College and State University, North Georgia College and State University and the University of North Carolina-Pembroke.
