Jowers, Coan and Turner Named Softball Players of the Week

Player of the Week

April Jowers, Armstrong Atlantic
Sr. • 2b • Columbus, Ga.

Jowers set the table for the No. 21-ranked Pirates by hitting .600 in Armstrong's 8-1 start to the 2012 season.  The reigning PBC Player of the Year had at least one hit in all nine games so far this season, stretching her current hitting streak to 15, dating back to last season. She had multi-hit games in all of Armstrong's five wins at the Eckerd Invitational. Snapped a 4-4 tie in the seventh inning with a two-run triple in Armstrong's 6-4 win over Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday and went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs in a 4-1 win over Nova Southeastern. Jowers moved into ninth place on the Peach Belt's all-time hit chart (247), passing Kelly Lee of UNF on Sunday.

Pitcher of the Week

Jessica Coan, North Georgia
Sr. • RHP • Duluth, Ga.

The reigning National Pitcher of the Year started right where she left off dominating the field in the 2012 Loyal Blue Classic. Coan pitched 18.1 innings while allowing only one run. The senior struck out 28 batters on her way to going 3-0 and recording a save. She only surrendered seven hits, while only walking four batters. She pitched six one-hit innings against Tusculum, striking out eight, and then struckout nine against Tusculum the next day.  She allowed two hits to North Greenville with seven strikeouts in four innings.  Leads the PBC with 10.69 strikeouts per game.

Freshman of the Week

Taylor Turner, Columbus State
Fr. • UT • Savannah, Ga.

Turner made the most of her first four collegiate games, hitting .500 with a 1.083 slugging percentage and pitching eight innings.  At the plate, the freshman collected at least one hit in all four games including a three-run home run against #9 Lenoir-Rhyne and another solo shot against Augusta State.  In four games she has five RBIs and three runs scored while striking out only once in 12 at-bats.  In the circle she made two appearances for eight innings total, allowing three earned runs and striking out four.  She leads the PBC in slugging and is tied for first in home runs.
