2007 Volleyball Team Notes (Through Games of Nov. 4)

  Armstrong Atlantic State (16-19, 5-5) -- The Armstrong Atlantic State volleyball team wrapped up the regular season with two road losses in the league, falling to 5-5 in the PBC and 16-19 overall ... The Pirates hit just. 058 in a 30-20, 30-23, 30-21 loss at Lander on Friday evening. Freshman Brendyce Budd notched 10 kills and 18 digs, while sophomore Nicole Yates tallied 23 digs ... It was Lander*s first-ever win over the Pirates in 22 tries ... AASU then took on PBC regular season champion USC Aiken on Saturday and fell in four games to the Pacers, 30-23, 29-31, 30-20, 30-21. Antje Reuleke led all players with 16 kills, while Gwen Clarke notched 15 kills and Stacia McCoy recorded 20 digs ... AASU*s game two win against the Pacers was the first by a league opponent since September ... As a team, the Pirates have set a single-season dig record, nothing 2,478 digs in 35 matches this season * snapping the old record of 2,385 digs, set last season ... Yates, who has already set the single-season AASU dig record, has posted 550 digs this season, one of the top 10 single-season dig totals in PBC history ...The Pirates will now head to the Peach Belt Conference tournament as the No. 3 seed and face No. 6 seeded Augusta State on Friday at 11:00 a.m. in Greenwood, S.C. AASU has earned a berth in the PBC Championship match each of the last eight seasons.
  Augusta State (16-18, 2-8) -- Augusta State Jaguars closed out the regular season this past weekend finishing 16-18 and 2-8 in the PBC … This is the most wins for the Jags since 1999 and the most wins under Coach Amber Glass … The Jags took on USC Aiken Friday, Nov. 2 falling 3-0 … Sophomore Jessica Howard let the way for the Jags with 16 kills and a .375 hitting percentage … Amy Hunt followed next with nine kills and a .273 hitting percentage … Saturday the Jags matched up with Lander dropping 3-0 …The Peach Belt Conference Championships will be hosted at Lander in Greenwood, S.C, Nov. 10-11. …The Jags are set to take on Armstrong Atlantic State on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 11 a.m.
  Francis Marion (13-20, 4-6) -- FMU won its only match last week, a home PBC sweep of UNCP – the same squad FMU will face in the opening round of the PBC Tournament on Saturday. FMU leads the all-time series 36-25.…..Only 38 times in its last 101 matches has FMU lost the opening game….Junior Jessica Lombardi had 16 kills and 14 digs vs UNCP for her team-leading 19th double-double. She has 955 career kills……Senior Jackie Phiel is in 5th place on the PBC career digs list with 1,680, and also has 1,106 career kills.....Freshman Kelsie Deaton had 26 digs vs UNCP, her fifth match of 20+ digs this season. She is averaging 5.4 digs per game since moving to the libero position five matches ago.……Over the previous two years, FMU was 45-8 in matches decided in three games, but this year FMU is 5-11….Four freshmen are in the Patriots’ regular rotation….Lombardi had the first triple-double (15 kills, 11 aces, 10 digs) in school history vs Converse on Oct. 6 – the 11 aces were a school record and tied the PBC record.….On Sept. 1, FMU and Catawba played the highest scoring match in Division II history, with Catawba setting a Division II record for points in a 5-game match with 148 points, while FMU tied the old mark of 140…..FMU has won three PBC Tournament titles (1997, 1998, 2005).
 
  Lander (22-9, 6-4) -- This season the Lander Bearcats achieved their highest finish ever in the PBC standings at second place with a 6-4 record… the 22 wins is a single-season school-record for wins in a season surpassing last year’s 20-win season… the six PBC wins is a single-season record surpassing 2003’s five-win total… in two years at Lander, Carla Decker has posted a 42-24 overall record for a .636 winning percentage… after falling to USC Aiken on Wednesday (3-0), Lander swept Armstrong Atlantic (3-0) and Augusta State (3-0) to finish its regular-season schedule… the win against Armstrong Atlantic was the Bearcats first over the Pirates in the 10-year history of the program… the win against Augusta State was the fourth straight against the Jags.

  UNC Pembroke (19-16, 3-7) -- UNCP lost its only match of the week to Francis Marion 3-0 (25-30, 26-30, 19-30). Pembroke is now 4-4 at home, 7-6 on the road and 8-6 at neutral sites. The Braves are 14-6 on the season in matches that go more than three games but are 5-10 in three-game matches. Junior setter Heather Fierce leads the PBC in assists with 1,412 on the season. On Oct. 27 libero Andrea Laza broke the PBC and UNCP single-game record for digs in a match with 50 against Lander. With the defeat of Armstrong Atlantic on Sept. 29, head coach Jeff Billington surpassed his season-high win total of 11 in 2005 with 12 on the year. UNCP has not won 19 matches since the 2001 season when the Braves went 19-15. Laza broke the UNCP single season digs record of 532 in a match against Augusta State on Oct. 20. Laza now stands at 706 for the season and 1227 for her career, 34 digs short of the UNCP career digs record of 1261 held by former Brave Andrea Cox (1995-97). 
  USC Aiken (24-4, 10-0) -- USC Aiken won all three matches this week to improve to 24-4, closing out the regular season by winning 20 of their final 21 games…With wins over Lander, Augusta State, and Armstrong Atlantic this week, the Lady Pacers closed out their first unbeaten conference season in 15 years…The 10 conference wins ties last year’s 10-2 mark as the most conference wins in a single season…Winning their second-straight PBC Regular Season Championship, and the program’s sixth in 17 years of NCAA play, USC Aiken claimed its first outright title since 1995…Three Lady Pacers hit over .400 for the week led by Mandy Gerolstein’s .493 performance…Jasmine Edney hit .429 and averaged 1.80 blocks per game while Missy Deardorff hit .407 with nearly one block and 3.30 digs per game…After a 3-0 win over Lander on Halloween night, the Lady Pacers dismantled Augusta State in three games, hitting .500 as a group led by Gerolstein’s 16-kill, .800 hitting percentage night…USCA finished off Armstrong Atlantic on Saturday, but not before the Pirates won game two, ending the Lady Pacers streak of 22-straight individual game wins…For the conference season, USC Aiken was 30-4 in individual games…The Lady Pacers enter this weekend’s PBC Tournament as the number one seed and will play the winner of Francis Marion and UNC Pembroke in the semifinal round on Saturday at 7:00 PM in Greenwood, S.C…USCA is seeking its second-straight PBC Tournament title and the program’s fifth in school history…A PBC Tournament crown would send the Lady Pacers back to their second-straight NCAA Tournament.
