AUGUSTA, GA -- The Peach Belt Conference released its first-ever
women’s basketball preseason All-Conference team on Tuesday.
Six players were named to the team: Tiara Good and Stephanie Ponds
from Lander, Syretha Marble and Megan Huffman from North Georgia,
Armstrong Atlantic State’s Kaneetha Gordon and Clayton
State’s Shantel Ragin. The team was chosen by the
league’s Sports Information Directors. The team was
originally to be composed of five players, but a tie for the final
spot expanded the roster to six.
Lander’s Tiara Good was the top pick on nine of 11
ballots. A senior from Jonesville, S.C., Good was the 2007 PBC
Player of the Year and an All-American honorable mention. She led
the Peach Belt Conference in scoring with 21.9 ppg and also had 7.2
rebounds per outing. She also led the league in assists with 6.3
per game and twice came within a rebound of getting a
triple-double.
Stephanie Ponds was named All-Conference and All-Region for
Lander in 06-07. A senior from Bethune, S.C., she averaged 16.4 ppg
and 9.0 rpg. She had 12 double-doubles last season with a scoring
high of 31 against both Clayton State and Georgia Southwestern.
Syretha Marble was named All-Conference for North Georgia and
led the team in rebounding with 7.6 per game to go with her 15.2
points per game. The junior from Canton, Ga., scored in double
figures 22 times in 26 games with a season-best of 27 against
Lander.
Megan Huffman was named All-Conference for the Lady Saints after
leading the team in scoring with 15.4 ppg and surpassed the
1,000-point mark in her career last January. Ranked seventh in the
league in scoring she also led her team in blocked shots and was
second in assists.
Kaneetha Gordon was named a WBCA All-American honorable mention
in addition to her All-Conference honor. The senior from Riceboro,
Ga., scored 15.6 ppg and led the Peach Belt with 11.6 rebounds per
game. She set a PBC tournament single-game record with 23 rebounds
against USC Upstate and was ranked seventh in the nation (Division
II) in rebounding last season.
Shantel Ragin was named All-Conference last year after helping
the Clayton State Lakers win the PBC Championship, the PBC
Tournament, the NCAA Regional and make their first-ever appearance
in the Elite Eight, where they won a game. The senior from Pembroke
Pines, Fla., averaged 9.9 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.
The 2007 PBC basketball season begins on Nov. 2 when Lander
plays in the Disney Classic in Orlando. The women’s
basketball preseason coaches poll will be released on Friday.
