Mar 2, 2008 PBC Releases Women's Basketball Tournament Bracket AUGUSTA – Ga. – The Peach Belt Conference has
released the bracket for the 2008 women’s basketball
tournament. Francis Marion, despite losing their final two games of
the season, will be the top seed for the championships, which begin
on Wednesday at USC Aiken.
Five PBC women’s teams were tied atop the conference
standings following the 20-game league schedule, setting a new
record for regular-season co-champions. The prior number was three
co-champions in the 1994-95 season. The five teams were placed in
the conference’s multi-team tiebreaker, which looked at their
performances against one another. Francis Marion took that tiebreak
with a 5-3 record against Clayton State, Lander, Augusta State and
USC Aiken.
Clayton State will be the #2 seed following their dramatic 76-74
win at Francis Marion in Saturday's finale. Augusta State
will be the #3 seed and Lander will be the #4 seed after winning
five of six games to end the season. Host USC Aiken will be
the #5 seed.
Columbus State had the opportunity to become the sixth
co-champion, but fell at UNC Pembroke on Saturday 61-57 and will be
the #6 seed. Armstrong Atlantic State is seventh followed by #8
North Georgia, #9 GCSU and #10 UNC Pembroke.
The top six seeds received byes in the first round, leaving UNC
Pembroke to face Armstrong Atlantic State in the tournament’s
first game on Wednesday at 1:00. North Georgia will take on GCSU on
Wednesday at 3:00.
The tournament continues to the championship game on Sunday, March
9, at 2:00.
