Peach Belt Announces Women’s Golf All-Conference Team
PINE MOUNTAIN, GA – The Peach Belt Conference has announced the 10-member women’s golf All-Conference team at a banquet at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Ga.; site of the 2012 Championships. UNC Pembroke’s Meghan Moore was named the league’s Player of the Year while Flagler’s Marie Santacroce was named the Freshman of the Year. Columbus State’s Brian Padgett was named the Coach of the Year.
Moore was a two-time winner in 2011-12 as she won both the Armstrong Pirate Women’s Invitational and the Ralph Hargett Memorial Tournament in March. A junior from Durham, N.C., she also had a pair of second-place finishes, two thirds and a fourth. She had eight top-10 finishes in nine tournaments this season, second-most in the Peach Belt, and is tied for second in the league with a 76.9 stroke average. A two-time PBC Player of the Week, she becomes the first UNCP women’s golfer to be named the PBC Player of the Year.
Marie Santacroce led the Flagler team and is 12th in the PBC with a 79.9 stroke average. A true freshman from Mattituck, NY, she had her first top-10 finish in her first collegiate tournament at the Anderson Invitational where she was ninth. She shot a 69 in the final round of the Lady Moc Classic, tied for the second-lowest single round in the Peach Belt this season. She shot a 75 to win a dual match with Chicago State and another 75 in the second round of the Lady Falcon Invitational. Santacroce becomes the first Flagler female student-athlete, in any sport, to be named a PBC Freshman of the Year.
Brian Padgett founded the Columbus State women’s golf program in 2009 and three years later has the team in contention for a PBC Championship. The Cougars captured two tournament victories in 2011-12 and had three second-place finishes. CSU won the Montevallo Invitational in the fall and the West Georgia Invitational in the spring. The team also had a strong showing at the 17-team Ralph Hargett Memorial Tournament where they finished second and were second of 18 teams at the BSC Southern Shootout. CSU enters the PBC Championships with the second-lowest team per-round stroke average in the league. For Padgett, the Coach of the Year award is his first.
