Lander Ousts UNC Pembroke in Peach Belt Tournament

GREENWOOD----Stacey Copeland scored one goal and added one assist Tuesday afternoon to lead the No. 3-seeded Lander women's soccer team to a 2-0 Peach Belt Conference tournament victory over sixth-seeded UNC Pembroke. Lander advances to Friday's semifinals at a yet to be determined site.

The Lady Bearcats improve to 13-4 overall, while UNCP falls to 12-6-1. The 13 victories is a single-season record for Lander, which began a soccer team in 1998. The previous best season was nine wins in 1999.

Copeland scored her first goal in the 47th minute on an unassisted goal to give the Lady Bearcats a 1-0 lead.

Valarie Smith scored Lander's second goal in the 57th minute on an assist from Copeland.

Lander outshot UNCP, 14-12, and led in corner kicks, 5-3.

Lander goalkeeper Rachael Hine recorded five saves, while UNCP's Whitney Beverly had three.
