HOUSTON, Texas - The No. 2-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State
women's tennis team will make its fifth consecutive appearance in
the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis semifinals after Thursday's 5-1
victory over No. 8-ranked Barry at Memorial Park in Houston,
Texas.
The Lady Pirates (30-1) also won their 30th match of the year,
giving AASU 30 wins in three of the last four seasons. Barry
finishes the season with a 21-7 record.
AASU took a 2-1 lead after doubles as the tenth-ranked duo of Alida
Muller-Wehlau and Martina Beckmann picked up an 8-2 win over Angie
Werschel and Helen Wisniewski at No. 2 doubles. The third-ranked
duo of Iuliia Stupak and Gabriella Kovacs then notched an 8-4 win
over the 11th-ranked team of Ildiko Csordas and Caroline Stevens.
Barry picked up its doubles point with Olivia Lilien and Berit
Peterson's 8-4 win over Alisa Kagukina and Sofia Haggstrom.
After doubles, rain halted play for an hour and 20 minutes before
singles could be competed. Gabriella Kovacs picked up AASU's first
singles point with a quick 6-1, 6-1 win over Helen Wisniewski at
No. 4 singles. Martina Beckmann then knocked off Berit Peterson,
6-1, 7-5, at No. 5 singles. Freshman Alida Muller-Wehlau put the
Lady Pirates into the semifinals with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Angie
Werschel at No. 3 singles.
AASU now advances to face the winner of BYU-Hawaii and West Florida
in the national semifinals at 9:00 a.m. on Friday. Should
BYU-Hawaii advance, it will be the fifth meeting in the last five
years between the two schools who have won the national titles each
season - BYU Hawaii was the national champion in 2004, 2006 and
2007, with AASU winning in 2005. The two schools are also the only
DII schools to defeat each other in that span.
