Lady Pirates Punch Ticket To Round Of 16 With 5-1 Win Over Flagler

SAVANNAH, Ga. - The three-time defending NCAA Division II national champion Armstrong Atlantic State University women's tennis team advanced to the Round of 16 on Tuesday with a 5-0 win over Flagler in the Southeast Region final at Bacon Park in Savannah.

The quest for the seventh overall title, and fourth straight, for the fourth-ranked Lady Pirates (26-2) will begin on Wednesday, May 11, at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla., when Armstrong meets Indiana (Pa.) in a first-round match. IUP advanced to its first-ever Round of 16 with a 5-4 win over Slippery Rock in the Atlantic Regional. Flagler sees its third straight regionals appearance come to a close in the regional final, finishing with a 12-7 record.

Armstrong wasted little time in taking a commanding 3-0 lead after doubles. The No. 3-ranked duo of Barbora Krtickova and Alida Muller-Wehlau downed Rachel Gould and Lauren Pfeiffer, 8-2, at No. 1 doubles. No. 13-ranked Kathleen Henry and Tina Ronel then defeated Veronica Figueroa and Jennifer Saviano, 8-3, at No. 2 doubles, while Aleksandra Filipovski and Jessica Gardefjord collected an 8-2 win over Deon Miller and Gabby Scammacca at No. 3 doubles.

In singles, No. 7-ranked Muller-Wehlau put up a quick 6-0, 6-0 singles win over Pfeiffer at No. 1 singles, while No. 12 Filipovski defeated Saviano, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 3 singles.
