2011 Volleyball Team Notes (Nov. 7)

  Armstrong Atlantic State (33-1, 13-1) -- The No. 15-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University volleyball squad captured its fourth Peach Belt Conference regular season title with two wins on the week, sharing the crown with Flagler as both teams finished 13-1 on the season ... Flagler handed Armstrong its first loss of the season on Wednesday, snapping Armstrong's school- and Peach Belt record 31 match winning streak, but the Pirates rebounded to defeat Lander and USC Aiken in four over the weekend ... The Pirates will be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming PBC Tournament and face Lander in the first round on Friday in Augusta ... Senior Brendyce Budd collected 17 kills against USC Aiken on Saturday, moving into 10th place on the Armstrong all-time kill chart with 890, passing both Darcey Krug and Torrie Bevolo.
  Augusta State (14-18, 5-9) -- ASU closed conference play with two losses, falling 3-2 in a 5-set thriller at UNC Pembroke and 3-1 to Francis Marion...They will slot in as the No. 5 seed in the conference tournament...Senior Jessica Hanson continued her offensive efficiency onslaught, blasting 26 kills with only three errors for a .413 hitting percentage...Junior Mandy Irizarry hammered 29 kills, notching a double-double with 12 kills and 17 digs versus UNC Pembroke...Junior Krystin Wahlig totaled 107 assists, including 54 assists to go with 23 digs against UNC Pembroke...Freshman Alex Rohlfing carded a double-double against Francis Marion, with 12 kills and 12 digs...Rohlfing still leads the PBC in kills per set (3.29) and total kills (375), Hanson is fourth in attack percentage and 12th in blocks per set, Kristin Koch is seventh in service aces per set, Paige Tuttle ranks seventh in blocks per set and third in solo blocks, and Collette Richards checks in as fifth in total digs and seventh in service aces.

Flagler (25-6, 13-1) -- Flagler posted a 4-0 week and grabbed a share of the regular season conference title, its third in as many years. The Saints are 39-3 in conference play since joining in 2009. Leading Flagler this week were Dianna Craine, Emilee Taylor and Sophie Meyer. Craine led the team with 55 kills (3.44/set), hit .261 and added 56 digs (3.50/s). She had double-doubles in three-of-the-four matches. Taylor recorded 54 kills (3.38/s) and 35 digs (2.19/s). Crystal Niederriter hit an efficient .343 with 32 kills and only nine errors on 67 swings. Rachel Stacy recorded a team-high 16 total blocks (1.00/s). Casey Gnann led in digs with 78 (4.88/s) and Olivia Snipes tallied 198 assists (12.38/s). Flagler posted an impressive 3-1 win over No. 15 and then-undefeated Armstrong Atlantic at Flagler Gym. Taylor had 18 kills and hit .361. The Saints sent their seniors out in fashion with a 3-1 win over USC Aiken. Snipes, Jillian Unitas and Laura Beth Lancaster were honored before the match. Flagler clinched a share of the league title with a sweep over Lander on Saturday. Before the Lynn match that night, Flagler honored 13-year head coach Taylor Mott who coached her final match in Flagler Gym. She, and her two kids, will join her husband, who is currently working in Tennessee. Mott is a two-time PBC Coach of the Year is two wins shy of winning her 300th career match. Former volleyball players joined the current team in celebrating her time at Flagler. The Saints won an exhausting 3-2 match over Lynn to conclude the regular season with a nine-match winning streak. Flagler opens the Peach Belt Conference Tournament on Friday vs. Montevallo at 1 p.m.
  Francis Marion (12-17, 4-10) -- Francis Marion finished the regular season with a 2-1 week that catapulted the Patriots to the six seed for the PBC Tournament....FMU will face UNCP in the quarterfinals. The Patriots are 42-29 all-time against the Braves, including 1-1 this season.... Sophomore setter Nicole Bennett averaged 8.70 assists, 2.00 digs, and 1.20 kills last week, while hitting .333....Senior Ashlee Crook owns with a .941 serve receive percentage for 2011, including a streak of successfully receiving opponents’ serves of 111 earlier this year. She pushed her career totals to identical figures of 893 kills and 893 digs....Sophomore Liz Drewry had a pair of double-digit kill matches last week....Senior OH Amanda Mitchell has 887 career kills.....Sophomore Megan Mooney posted 11 kills vs ASU...Senior libero Hallie Legg has registered eleven 20-dig matches this season, including a career-high 36 vs Anderson on Oct. 15 (10 shy of the school record). She averaged 4.90 digs per game last week and is averaging 4.55 digs per game this season (3rd-best in the PBC). She has 1,240 digs in her career.....Only 94 times in its last 223 matches has FMU lost the opening game....Over the past six years, FMU is 82-47 in matches decided in three games.
  Lander (13-18, 3-11) -- Notes not submitted.
Montevallo (13-17, 4-10) -- The Falcons went 0-2 to close out the 2011 regular season. Um dropped a pair of road matches at Francis Marion and UNC Pembroke. UM fell 3-0 to FMU and 3-2 to UNCP. The Falcons were led by Manyi Ati for the week as she averaged 3.00 kills per set. Senior Rachel Wotitzky averaged 4.25 digs per set while senior Anna Garrison averaged 8.75 assists per set. Ati now leads the Falcons on the season with 3.11 kills per set and a .351 attack percentage. She now ranks second in the PBC in kills per set and third in hitting percentage. Freshman Michelle Walker ranks fourth in the PBC in kills per set while Garrison ranks third in assists per set. Wotitzky is fourth in digs per set in the PBC. The Falcons will now travel to Augusta State University for the Peach Belt Conference Tournament where they will face No. 2 seed Flagler College in the opening round.
 
UNC Pembroke (15-15, 7-7) -- The Lady Braves finished out the regular season with 3-0 run last week by taking down Francis Marion, Augusta State and Montevallo to capture the No. 3 seed in the conference … On Wednesday, UNCP used impeccable serving to close out the match with the Patriots as the Black and Gold tallied 11 service aces en route to defeating the visiting Patriots, 3-0 … The Lady Braves saw outstanding performances from seven athletes including Rebecca Morgan who collected 10 kills and Ashlyn Rebok with all 36 assists … The Lady Braves hosted Augusta State on Friday evening with an epic five-set victory as Morgan and Rebok grabbed career-highs during the match … Morgan led UNCP as she tallied a double-double with a career-high 24 kills and 17 digs, while Rebok registered a double-double with a career best 59 assists and 12 digs … The Lady Braves posted another 3-2 victory over Montevallo on Saturday afternoon as Morgan posted her second consecutive double-double as she tallied 20 kills and 21 digs …Rebok dished out 53 assists and 15 digs for her second consecutive double-double … UNCP will next be in action on November 11 when the team will compete in the opening round of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament in Augusta, Ga., as the Black and Gold will face the No. 6 seed Francis Marion.
  USC Aiken (15-15, 7-7) -- The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team closed out its regular season with a 15-15 record overall ... Currently ranked 10th in the NCAA Division II Southeast Region, USC Aiken concluded its 2011 Peach Belt Conference campaign with a 7-7 record ... USC Aiken was 7-3 in its final 10 matches of the year ... Last week, Pacer junior outside hitter Shannon Byers (Morristown, Minn./Faribault) surpassed the 1,000-dig plateau ... Byers now has 1,069 digs in her career ... Byers, who is leading the Pacers with 295 kills in 2011, is nearing becoming the sixth member of USC Aiken's exclusive 1,000-kill, 1,000 dig club ... Byers currently has 960 kills in her career entering the Peach Belt Conference Volleyball Tournament.
