Peach Belt Releases Volleyball Tournament Bracket

AUGUSTA, GA – The Peach Belt Conference has released the bracket for the 2011 Volleyball Tournament which begins on Friday, Nov. 11 at the George A. Christenberry Fieldhouse at Augusta State University.  Armstrong Atlantic State is the top seed for the tournament while Flagler is the second seed.  In all, six of the eight seeds, including the top two, had to be decided by tiebreaker.

Both Armstrong and Flagler finished the regular season with 13-1 conference records, their only losses coming against each other.  Using the PBC tiebreaker formula, each team was compared with the next-highest seed but as both had beaten every other team in the league, the next step involved counting the total sets lost against the next-highest seed.  UNC Pembroke is the third seed for the tournament.  Armstrong beat the Braves by identical 3-0 scores in both of their regular-season matches while Flagler bested UNCP by scores of 3-1 and 3-2, giving the Pirates the top seed.

UNC Pembroke got the third seed after winning their final four matches of the regular season.  The Braves tied with USC Aiken with 7-7  league records and split their regular-season matches by identical 3-0 scores.  Both lost to Armstrong and Flagler twice, but UNC Pembroke swept Augusta State in two regular-season matches while USCA fell to the Jaguars twice.  Augusta State is the fifth seed in the tournament.

The final tiebreak was for the sixth and seventh seeds between Francis Marion and Montevallo.  FMU captures the seed thanks to a season sweep of the Falcons, including a 3-1 win over UM on Friday night.

Flagler and UM will begin tournament play at 1:00 on Friday with FMUmeeting UNCP at 3:00.  Armstrong takes on eighth-seeded Lander at 5:00 with host Augusta State meeting USC Aiken at 7:00.  Semifinal matches are at 4:00 and 6:00 on Saturday with the championship on Sunday at 2:00.  All PBC Tournament matches will be covered with live stats and a live video broadcast.
